A Doorway Into American History
When MGM required a monumental entrance for the restored Armory building at its hotel and casino in Springfield, Massachusetts, an ordinary commercial door would never do. The building carried the visual authority of an American stronghold and stood within a city whose armory tradition reaches back to the Revolutionary War. Its new entrance had to communicate strength, permanence and respect for the craftsmen who helped build the nation.
MGM turned to ArtFactory.com to create an entrance worthy of that setting. The result was a pair of Gothic fortress doors: an eyebrow-arched, solid-timber entrance joined by traditional methods and fortified with genuine hand-forged wrought-iron hardware. This was not conceived as a lightweight copy with an aged surface. It was built in the original craft, using materials and working methods selected to carry the spirit of historic American construction into a demanding modern commercial setting.

An Arsenal for a New Nation

Springfield became a major Continental arsenal in 1777, storing arms and ammunition for the American Revolution. George Washington later inspected Springfield and recommended it for a national armory. Congress authorized the federal armory in 1794, and weapons production followed. For generations, Springfield Armory became a center of military production, precision engineering and American industrial innovation.
That legacy gave the MGM project unusual responsibility. An entrance placed in this setting needed to belong to the architecture rather than compete with it. Its scale, arched profile, disciplined panel pattern and substantial ironwork had to speak the language of fortification while functioning for a modern public building.
Begin With the Timber

Mortise-and-tenon joinery is among history’s most proven methods of uniting structural wood members. A projecting tenon is fitted into a corresponding mortise, allowing the rails and stiles to reinforce one another as a complete assembly. Properly executed, the joint distributes forces through the timber rather than asking surface fasteners or adhesives to carry the entire burden.
The raw assembly shown in the film reveals the architecture beneath the finish: deep panels, substantial rails and stiles, and carefully planned openings. Every visible detail begins with an underlying structural decision. That is why the finished entrance can possess both monumental scale and controlled movement.

Fire, Forge and the Hand of the Blacksmith
The ironwork was not selected as an afterthought. It was designed as part of the complete entrance and forged to harmonize with its proportions. In the fire, solid metal is heated until it can be drawn, upset, twisted and shaped. Under the hammer, the blacksmith controls both strength and form.
Ball-and-Twist Pulls for a Monumental Entrance
At the center of the doors are matching HH435 ball-and-twist pulls. Their spiraling shafts introduce movement within the disciplined panel geometry, while the heavy ball terminals give the handles the mass and authority demanded by the entrance. They fit the hand, but they also fit the building - a necessary balance in all successful architectural hardware.

A Hand-Applied Finish That Reveals the Craft
The dark, time-earned appearance was developed through a multilayered, hand-applied finishing process. Rather than conceal the timber beneath a plastic-looking coating, the finish allows grain, tool marks and subtle brown and bronze undertones to remain visible. Wood and iron are brought into the same visual family while retaining the truth of their separate materials.
