The Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany is a stunning example of gothic architecture and the largest gothic church in Northern Europe. The site where the cathedral stands has been used since late Roman times as a gathering place for Christians. A Roman Catholic cathedral, construction was begun on the current cathedral in 1248, but major work was halted in 1473 and the cathedral sat incomplete with a huge crane above the south tower for 400 years. Some minor work was continued until approximately 1530, when a lack of funds and interest caused people to abandon the construction. Work resumed in 1842 with the newfound interest in gothic design and architecture, and the cathedral was finally completed in 1880. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996.

The cathedral is full of the arching and flowing architecture and finely detailed carvings that are representative of the gothic style. This door, while not heavily carved, takes its inspiration from the grand entrance to the cathedral, reflecting the arches in the cathedral door with the lines of the door and glass surround, and the carved panels of the cathedral door as well.
