Custom French Paned Door: With Matching Sidelights
A panel door at Wawel Castle in Poland inspired this custom French paned door with paned sidelights. Wawel Castle was built in the 11th century and the castle was expanded in the Gothic style in the 14th century turning a few buildings into a complex. In 1499 there was a fire that destroyed the castle and King Alexander Jagiello commissioned an architect to rebuild the castle, this time in the Renaissance style. When there was another fire, part of the northern wing was rebuilt in the early Baroque style. In WWII, the curators of the castle removed the national treasures within the castle and had them sent first to France and then to Canada for safekeeping. Those treasures, including Szczerbiec, the coronation sword used from 1320 to around 1790 and the last surviving part of the Polish crown jewel collection, were returned in 1961.
Brightening the home by replacing the panels of the original with 1" thick glass without sacrificing the security of a 3" thick solid wood door gives the door a more welcoming feel and invites your guests into your home. You can choose the hardware you want or go with the hand forged wrought iron door pulls seen here. The beauty of working with a custom manufacturer is the ability to make changes to your door to make it unique.
