Gustav Stickley Library Table Number 625

Gustav Stickley Library Table Number 625 - ca. 1906 - H. 30 in. (76.2 cm); Diam. 55 in. (139.7 cm) - oak, leather

Gustav Stickley was an important figure in the American Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century. Hailing from Syracuse, New York, Stickley founded The Craftsman Workshops in 1904 to manufacture his line of furniture. It was around this time that Stickley introduced the style of table that is pictured. This type of table was first published in Stickley's 1902 sales periodical "The Craftsman". As of 1904 it was officially being sold as Library Table Number 625 in his catalog, and was offered in both wood and leather top models. At the time, the wood topped table sold for around $40, while the leather topped table sold for around $60.

Although, this style of six-legged, hexagonal table was offered for many years in Stickley's catalogs, original tables are very rare today. The table picture was owned by Stickley himself, and was among the furnishings from his home in Morris Plains, New Jersey. Today, the pictured table can be found on display at The Metropolitan Museum.
