These customers own a home in Michigan on Lake Superior. Their love for the area has made them very passionate about preserving the rich history of the Upper Peninsula and Great Lakes area. They have worked for seven years, carefully searching across the country to find real antiquities that tell the stories of the area, from the Native American tribes that settled the peninsula through the mining boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s and the long shipping history of the Great Lakes.
As they worked room by room, they have found well preserved items representing local history. The only thing they were missing was something to represent the nautical history of the area. They had some antique paddles and oars, but they were looking for something more substantial to truly represent the long and violent history of the Great Lakes.
The shipping history of the Great Lakes goes back hundreds of years but it is filled with missing and sunken ships. Perhaps one of the most famous is the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which happened in 1975 only 10 miles from the customers' home. On November 10, 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from sight and radar during one of the worst storms in decades; a storm that created waves 18-25 feet high and wind gusts close to 86 mph. It had a full load of iron ore and left Wisconsin in calm waters on November 9th and was in radio contact with the Arthur M. Anderson from early on in the journey. As the seas got rougher, they checked in with each other. The Fitzgerald reported it had lost some railings and had both pumps running.
When the Anderson made port in Whitefish Bay, they had had no contact with the Fitzgerald by radio or radar for over 30 minutes. The Coast Guard had already been alerted but the strength of the storm made it difficult to search and they were already searching for another ship that was overdue. When the Anderson headed back out into the storm an hour later to search, all that was found were the two lifeboats and some debris. There was no sign of the ship or the crew. The 729 foot ship, all its cargo, and its full crew of 29 had sunk to the bottom of Lake Superior. This year, 2015, marked the 40th anniversary of this tragedy. Even 40 years later, the community gathered together for memorial services. That is how deep the shipping history runs in this area.
When these customers found our authentic ships' wheel chandelier, they were sure they had found the missing piece for their nautical collection. Now this authentic ships' wheel chandelier, from a ship that sailed the Great Lakes, is another treasured piece of history in a home that celebrates the past.
