Custom Gothic Door Handle Historical Inspiration

This custom iron door handle design was inspired by the Gothic architectural style used in France. The pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress are dominant characteristics of Gothic architecture, which originated in 12th-century France and lasted into the 16th-century. This familiar style of architecture is found in many European cathedrals, churches, abbeys, castles, and palaces. Gothic is a late medieval period architectural style which included the rib vault, flying/buttresses, large window groupings, window tracery, rose windows, ornate facades, pinnacles, spires, and towers (all pointed arches). One of the defining characteristics of Gothic architecture is the pointed or ogival arch. Arches of a similar type were used in the Near East in Islamic architecture before they were structurally employed in medieval architecture. It is thought by some architectural historians that this was the inspiration for the use of the pointed arch in France, in otherwise Romanesque buildings, as at Autun Cathedral.

In Gothic architecture the pointed arch is used in every location where a vaulted shape is called for, both structural and decorative. Gothic openings such as doorways, windows, arcades and galleries have pointed arches. Gothic vaulting above spaces both large and small is usually supported by richly moulded ribs.
