Description
Custom Arched Cathedral Entrance: Solid Wood Double Doors
At ArtFactory.com we believe in building furniture and doors that are not something that you just use for a few years and then throw away. Building items that are disposable is a practice that is unique to the past fifty years. In the old world, when a piece of furniture was built, it was built from solid, natural materials by master craftsmen. Most importantly, it was built to last forever. Something like a solid wood entrance door would be passed down through a family for generations along with the home that was also built to last forever. With these custom arched cathedral entrance double doors, handcrafted from solid cedar (as shown), we have carried that tradition of built to last craftsmanship into the 21st century.
For the custom arched cathedral entrance, we built each side with a vertical planked wood design, that incorporates a solid wood Cross that goes across both door blades. The entrance also features a custom textured glass transom in the arched area of the solid wood door jamb.. A true modern masterpiece inspired by historic design, and built with period correct methods and materials. We have built these in the same hand and craft that would have been used in old world times, by great craftsmen of that era. This type of product cannot be built overnight, or with low quality materials. That is why we use the highest quality, full length solid timber, and build it by hand, using the age old, tried and tested method of mortise and tenon joinery. This makes for a product that will stand the test of time. Furthermore, although this is a full arch topped design as pictured, like all of our designs, it can be built with a flat, or semi-arched top, and for exterior, interior, residential, or commercial use.
Custom Arched Cathedral Entrance Custom Hardware
The custom arched cathedral entrance double doors, as pictured, features a unique, wavy grip handle variation of our hand hammered door handles. You can choose from any of our hundreds of styles of custom door handles or theme door pulls, or even provide your own design. We make custom door hardware in any size, style or design, and to fit any application. All of our custom handles and hardware are hand hammered into shape by master blacksmiths over a coal fired forge. As with all of our custom doors, your hardware options are fully customizable. You can also choose to customize with any accent elements that you may choose to complete the style, including decorative iron accent pieces, ornamental hinge straps, or custom clavos on any of our entrance designs. These decorative items are each hand hammered into shape by our master blacksmiths. Like all of our double doors, this custom arched cathedral entrance secures from the inside with a pair of blacksmith hand forged wrought iron slide bolt locks.
Additionally, all of our hardware comes advance patinated with a hand applied, heat infused iron oxide patina. This type of finish won't crack, peel, or flake like paints and powder coats. Our door hardware is built to your specifications by our master blacksmiths using hand forged wrought iron. When we say hand forged, we mean with fire, hammer, and anvil. We never cast, drop forge, or use any fast or mass production process. This means you will receive a fine art quality piece of hardware that is uniquely yours, of investment quality, and built to stand the test of time. This includes our hand applied, iron oxide patina finishes. These finishes are bonded to the metal at over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit so that the finish becomes part of the metal, and will stand the test of time with little or no maintenance.

Custom Arched Cathedral Entrance Fine Art Finish
The meticulous finish has been done in age old technique, using a 23-step hand rubbed process. We begin with fine hand sanding, and infused open grain hand applied stains. That puts the finish in the wood not just sprayed on it. This allows for the fine natural wood grains to show to perfection. There are then 20 additional steps requiring the application of wax, oils and lacquers with curing times between each process. This method is performed on all furniture and door wood surfaces inside and out. This tried and tested finish detail is required in the making of a one-of-a-kind, family heirloom quality product that meets world class investment quality standards that will stand the test of time. This process is the only way with little maintenance and the simple process of cleaning with oil will allow for a beautiful natural patina that will make this door more beautiful over time.

Holy Door Historic Details
A Holy Door (Latin: Porta Sancta) is traditionally an entrance portal located within the Papal major basilicas in Rome. The doors are normally sealed by mortar and cement from the inside so that they cannot be opened. They are ceremoniously opened during Jubilee years designated by the Pope, for pilgrims who enter through those doors may piously gain the plenary indulgences attached with the Jubilee year celebrations.
In October 2015, Pope Francis expanded the tradition by having each Roman Catholicdiocese throughout the world designate one or more local Holy Doors during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, so that Catholics could gain the plenary indulgences granted during the Jubilee year without having to travel to Rome.
Pope Boniface VIII began the tradition of the Holy Year, known as a Jubilee, in 1300 and the Catholic Church has celebrated them every 25 years or so ever since. A major part of the Holy Year for Catholics is a pilgrimage to Rome and the ritual passing over the threshold of the holy door to symbolise the passing into the presence of God. At the same time, remission of the temporal punishment for the pilgrims' sins is granted, known as an indulgence.
One of the earliest accounts of the Holy Year dates back to a Spanish historian, traveler and pilgrim called Pedro Tafur in 1437. Tafur connects the Jubilee indulgence with the right of sanctuary for those who had escaped persecution.

The History Of Arched Cathedral Doors
The use of arched cathedral doors can be traced back to the Gothic era, which began in the 12th century, and lasted until the 16th century. During this time, Gothic architecture was characterized by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, and the use of arched doors was a natural extension of this style.
Arched cathedral doors were often made from solid wood, and were built by skilled craftsmen, using traditional woodworking techniques. The doors were typically decorated with intricate carvings, moldings, and other decorative elements, such as metal studs or wrought iron hinges. These practices are still in use today at Artfactory.com, from field tree to finish product, our custom handmade wooden doors are built In the same hand and materials that were used in the Gothic era. This includes all natural materials, like hand hewn, full length planks of, naturally desert air cured, solid timber; and the age old, tried and tested method, of mortise and tenon, pegged and dowelled construction. All of our hardware items, from handles and hinges, to decorative elements like accents and clavos, are made from genuine wrought iron, and hand hammered into shape over a coal fired forge by our master blacksmiths. Never cast copied, or mass produced.
One of the most famous examples of arched cathedral doors is the main entrance to the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. The doors were installed in the 13th century and feature intricate carvings of biblical scenes and figures. The doors were also notable for their large size, measuring nearly 20 feet in height.
Similar size doors can be seen at the entrance of our world class showroom in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, arched cathedral doors also had practical benefits. The arched design allowed for greater height and width, making it easier to move large objects in and out of buildings. The solid wood construction provided durability and security, helping to keep out unwanted visitors and protect valuable belongings. In other words, fortress doors were built to keep you and your valuables safe in a time period before calling 911 was an option. Fortress doors can still provide the same type of security today. In other words, even the modern burglar, isn’t prepared to deal with an at least 4 inch thick, solid wood door.
Today, arched cathedral doors continue to be a popular choice for both traditional and modern architecture. They are often used in religious buildings, such as churches and cathedrals, but can also be found in private residences and commercial buildings. Many of the arched cathedral doors seen on the market today, are low quality knock-offs, that are often foreign made, and mass produced. These doors are essentially built to be disposable, and commonly have hollow centers, and are made with press boards, veneers, or plywood. Doors made from these type of materials will never stand the test of time, the way that centuries old European cathedral doors have. However, arched cathedral doors are still crafted using traditional woodworking techniques, only the finest grade, all natural materials, and built to last forever at ArtFactory.com.
