The original structure was a motte and double bailey castle.

Arundel Castle in West Sussex, England has descended directly through the families from 1138 to the present. It has been the seat for the Dukes of Norfolk for 850 years.

The 14th Duke of Arundel, Thomas Howard, was called "The Collector." His finds and purchases make up the majority of what is found in the main gallery of the castle. The contents include some of the personal items of Mary Queen of Scots, as well as many privately commissioned paintings by noted artists of the age.
