Despite measuring just 11 miles at it's longest point, Candlewood Lake is the largest lake in Connecticut. The man made lake was built between 1926 and 1928 as a means of generating electricity from the inflow of the Housatonic River. The real estate located around its roughly 60 miles of shoreline is among the most coveted in the state, and is a popular vacation spot for residents of New York City.

The 8.4 square mile lake is a popular tourists and recreation year round, but is most popular as a summer getaway. It is also a popular destination for scuba divers who are looking to explore the sunken village of Jerusalem which was submerged by the creation of lake. There is said be 1920's era buildings and motor vehicles sunken beneath the lakes 40-80 foot average depths. The lake's name was inspired by Candlewood Mountain in the nearby town of New Milford.
