Description
In the eleventh century Foucauld, Lord of La Roche, appears in 1019 in the act of a cartoon of Uzerche. He attended a family ceremony with his sons, his daughter Ava and his son-in-law, Aimery Ostafranc, the first lord of Rochechouart, during which the Vicomte de Limoges gave the church of Nieuil to the abbey of Uzerche.
This lord is related to the Frankish dynasty and it is he who builds the square dungeon.
When the Foucauld, encouraged by the Count of Poitou, wanted to control the castles of Loubert, Chabanais and Confolens in addition to the castle of Verteuil, they underwent the attack of Count Angouleme Bougrain II who dismantled Verteuil in 1137 and then His son Guillaume IV Taillefer, who plundered the castle of La Rochefoucauld in 1148.
The castle of Verteuil was the place where Francis VI de la Rochefoucauld wrote his Maxims and Memoirs about 1650, for he was sent back to his lands by Louis XIV.
