Historical Origin And Design Inspiration
The Ch?teau de Montb?liard (Castle of Montbeliard), also known as the Ch?teau des ducs de W?rttemberg (Castle of the Dukes of W?rttemberg) is a fortress located on an outcropping rock that surveys the town of Montb?liard in the Doubs d?partement of France. It is believed that there has been a fortress on the site since the Gallo-Roman times, though then it was only a wooden watchtower acting as an observation post for the defence of the town of Mandeure (Epomanduodurum). Until 1397, the castle belonged to the Montfaucon family. The marriage of Henriette d'Orbe to Eberhard IV, son of the count Eberhard III of W?rttemberg, transferred the ownership of the castle to the W?rttemberg family.
Montb?liard is the birthplace of: Nicolaus Taurellus (1547-1606), philosopher and theologian Nicolas Tournier (1590-ca. 1638), painter Wolf Christoph Zorn von Plobsheim (1655-1721), architect (de:Wolf Christoph Zorn von Plobsheim) Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), naturalist and zoologist Alexander of W?rttemberg (1771-1833) Fr?d?ric Cuvier (1773-1838), zoologist and physisist Henri Mouhot (1826-1861), naturalist Ren? Thom (1923"2002), mathematician
