The complete set features a massive round table with ten matching high-backed chairs. There is no throne and no head chair. Every chair is equal in size, construction, and importance, preserving the central meaning of the legendary Round Table.

The Knights of the Round Table and Windsor Castle

The Knights of King Arthur’s Round Table belong to one of the most enduring legends in Western history. Arthur’s court represented an ideal kingdom guided by courage, loyalty, justice, service, and fellowship.

The circular table was essential to that ideal. With no head position, no knight was seated above another. Each member of the fellowship shared an equal place in the circle and an equal responsibility to uphold its principles.

King Arthur and his knights remain legendary figures rather than fully documented historical individuals. However, their stories greatly influenced the kings, courts, tournaments, architecture, and chivalric traditions of medieval England.

Windsor Castle has a genuine and important connection to this Arthurian tradition. King Edward III was deeply inspired by the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. In 1348, he established the Order of the Garter, which remains Britain’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry. The famous surviving medieval table associated with the Arthurian legend is displayed in the Great Hall at Winchester Castle — not Windsor Castle. It cannot be proven to have belonged to King Arthur, but it demonstrates how powerfully the Round Table tradition influenced medieval English history. H.J. Nick’s Inspiration: Bringing History Back to Life

H.J. Nick did not intend to create a museum replica of an object whose original form cannot be historically proven. Instead, he studied the meaning of the Round Table and the natural materials, proportions, joinery, and craftsmanship that would have been familiar to the master builders of its inspired era.

His goal was to create a genuine heirloom that could have stood with authority inside a medieval great hall while remaining fully functional for a distinguished home, estate, lodge, castle, private club, or historic interior today.

The result is a table that appears powerful without being excessive, ancient without being artificially distressed, and monumental without losing its welcoming purpose.

One Circle — Ten Equal Chairs

This Castle Round Table is surrounded by ten matching high-backed timber chairs.

• There is no throne.
• There is no elevated chair.
• There is no head of the table.

Each chair is handcrafted to the same scale, design, and standard. Their broad plank backs, squared uprights, substantial timber seats, and traditional joinery complement the powerful architectural character of the table.

Together, the ten chairs complete an unbroken circle, expressing the principle that every person invited to the table has an equal place in the gathering.

Although this set is shown with ten chairs, every ArtFactory.com commission is custom built. The table can be created in virtually any requested diameter and with as many or as few matching chairs as the client’s room and intended use require.

A Four-Inch-Thick Solid Plank Tabletop

The massive round tabletop is a full four inches thick.

It is constructed from broad, full-length planks of solid, naturally air-cured old-growth timber. The boards extend across the table with continuous natural grain and are cut to form the round perimeter.

This is not butcher block, parquet, veneer, plywood, particleboard, laminated strips, or a surface assembled from short pieces.

Each broad plank retains the natural grain, checking, knots, movement, and individual character of the original tree. The substantial four-inch edge reveals the true mass of the timber and gives the table the strength and visual authority expected of an important castle furnishing.

These are honest materials, allowed to remain honest in their appearance.

A Massive Central Pedestal—Not Ordinary Table Legs

The round top is supported by one massive central wooden pedestal rather than individual table legs.

Its powerful, ox-yoke-inspired form supports the weight of the solid plank top while allowing the ten matching chairs to be positioned evenly around the circle.

The pedestal is integral to the table’s identity. It creates a strong architectural center without establishing a head position or interrupting the equality of the surrounding seats.

This central support is constructed from solid timber using traditional structural joinery — not modern hollow components concealed beneath a decorative exterior.

Mortise-and-Tenon, Pegged-and-Doweled Construction

This table and its matching chairs are not held together with exposed nails, screws, bolts, or mass-produced metal fasteners.

The structural connections are created using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, fitted by hand and secured with wooden pegs and dowels. These are the time-tested methods that allowed important medieval doors, furnishings, roof structures, and architectural works to survive for centuries.

Every joint must be individually cut, fitted, adjusted, and tested by a skilled craftsman. Properly executed mortise-and-tenon construction allows the components to work together as one complete structure.

The pegs are not decorative dots placed across the surface. They appear only where structurally appropriate, securing genuine joinery beneath them.

This is the difference between furniture that is assembled for delivery and furniture built by master craftsmen as a permanent work.

Naturally Air-Cured Old-Growth Timber

Our solid timber is naturally air cured rather than forced rapidly through commercial kiln-drying procedures. Air curing allows the wood to season gradually while retaining the density, strength, grain, and natural character that make old-growth timber extraordinary.

We do not use faux wood, particleboard, thin veneers, molded plastic components, or hollow materials disguised to resemble solid timber.

When we say solid wood, we mean solid, full-length natural timber — the Real McCoy.

The table’s powerful construction, visible grain, natural imperfections, and hand-worked surfaces are not manufacturing defects. They are evidence of the authentic material and the hand of the craftsmen who shaped it.

A Historic Hand-Applied Fine-Art Finish

The finish is created through ArtFactory.com’s meticulous 23-step, hand-applied process.

The timber is carefully prepared and hand sanded before open-grain stains are worked into the wood. This places the color within the timber rather than covering it with a thick sprayed coating.

Successive applications of natural oils, waxes, stains, and protective finishing materials are applied and allowed to cure between processes. The finish is completed on exposed and concealed wooden surfaces, including the table, pedestal, chairs, and underside components.

This demanding process allows the natural grain to remain visible while developing the rich depth and patina associated with historic furnishings.

With proper care and periodic oiling, the table will not merely grow older. It will become richer and more beautiful as each generation adds to its story.
