Frank Lloyd Wright - Allen Residence
Inspired by the low horizontal lines that dominated the landscape of the Midwest, Wisconsin native and architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed his praire-style homes in a simplistic fashion when compared with the popular Victorian architecture of that era. His stylized architecture featured free-flowing interior spaces and included harmonious furniture designed for form and function. Between the early 1890s and 1918 Wright designed a series of homes and their furniture seeking to merge the exterior and interior design together for a cohesive overall design concept.
Working with designer George M. Niedecken, Wright worked on eleven houses including the Henry J. Allen residence for the Wichita, Kansas newspaper man. Integrating all aspects of the home was a common theme in all Wright homes, and the Allen house featured an Arts & Crafts movement inspired dining table design. Similar to the Husser residence dining table, the Allen table featured a slat design without the check board edge pattern, and with larger leg bases made from walnut wood.
