Mortise and Tenon Joints in Custom Furniture
Used for thousands of years by woodworkers worldwide, the mortise and tenon joint joins pieces of wood with a simple and strong form. The two main components of the joinery include the mortise hole and the tenon, which is cut to fit the exact measurements of the mortise hole. The joint is then wedged, glued, or pinned to lock the pieces in place. Learn more about the terminology and history of joinery. Learn more and view diagrams of mortise and tenon joinery.
American Black Walnut Wood Furniture
Highly prized for its dark-color true heartwood, black walnut is heavy and strong yet easily worked. Historically walnut has been used for making custom furniture and flooring.
Custom Designed Furniture with Lion’s Paw Carving
The use of an animal’s paw for the foot of furniture can be traced to Greek tripod tables, which were modified designs of Egyptian prototypes of ancient furniture designs. The furry paw of the lion can be found in early Roman and Greek furniture designs, as well as English, Italian Renaissance, and French designs. Popularized by Thomas Chippendale in 18th-centry English furniture designs, the lion’s paw was a primary decorating motif in these designs. The paw foot was also used in the Cabriole chair leg, with Queen Anne style using a pad foot, and Chippendale designs commonly using the claw-and-ball foot design.
