From The Founder...

The Missing Life Changing Dollar in 1959...

A Science Fair. A Coal Shed. A Promise.

Before ArtFactory.com… Before the monumental doors, the forged iron, the chandeliers built for 28-foot ceilings… There was a 7th-grade science fair in Taylorville, Illinois.

And there was a rocket. This was during the Space Race — when Russia had sent a dog into space aboard Sputnik and the world was looking toward the sky.

"I didn’t want to read about rockets. I wanted to build one."

Where It Was Built

That rocket wasn’t built in a laboratory.

It was built in my dad’s old coal shed behind the tar paper shack we lived in — a small four-room house; 1002 South Houston Street, Taylorville, Illinois. That coal shed was my workshop. No money. No fancy tools. No store-bought kits. Just scraps, hand tools, and determination.

A boy and his rocket.

Built From Scrap — Made to Look Real

The rocket wasn’t metal. It was framed from wood. Skinned with cardboard. Painted with aluminum paint so it looked like steel.

I painted USA down the side — because we believed in competing for the future. Inside, I wired salvaged radio tubes, wiring, and switches so when you opened the panel it glowed like a real control system.

And in the nose cone sat the astronaut:

  • A rubber mouse I had found.
  • If Russia could send a dog into space…
  • America could send a mouse.

The Day Everything Changed

When I brought that rocket into school, the room changed. Kids stepped aside. Teachers circled it. People knocked on it because they thought it was metal. It wasn’t. But it was built with pride.

“Greatness doesn’t come from perfect conditions.

It comes from vision and the will to build.”

I Won First Place, I didn’t just place. I won first. And, I earned the right to go to the Illinois State Science Fair. For a kid from Taylorville, that was everything.

The Dollar That Changed My Life

But I needed two dollars to go. Two dollars. So after school, I walked around picking up pop bottles for deposit. I hustled hard and raised more than one dollar. But I couldn’t reach two. I was short one dollar. I offered to pay it back by continuing to collect bottles after the fair. I was denied. And I never got to go.

“You can win… and still be stopped by circumstance.”

That moment shaped the next 60 years of my life. I made a promise: If I ever had the power to help others rise, I would never let someone’s future be denied over something small.

The Lost Art
Apprentice-to-Master Program

That promise became the foundation of the Lost Art Apprentice-to-Master Program.

For over six decades, this program has:

  • Transformed beginners into master craftsmen
  • Allowed individuals to become self-supporting
  • Preserved Old World craftsmanship techniques
  • Produced some of the finest architectural products in the world

Today, we have master craftsmen still working into their fourth decade with us. And those masters have passed their knowledge on to many more. People who never knew they had the ability to become craftsmen…. became masters.

A young builder who refused to let one dollar determine his future.

From the Coal Shed to “Freedom Is Not Free”

The same spirit that built that rocket behind the tar paper shack… is the same spirit that builds our
work today.

In 2026, that journey came full circle with the creation of one of our most meaningful patriotic works:

"Freedom Is Not Free"

A hand-carved American Eagle table — sculpted entirely by hand — created as a tribute to sacrifice, service, and American craftsmanship. It was respectfully gifted to President Donald J. Trump as a symbol of American-made excellence and enduring freedom.

From a rubber mouse in a cardboard rocket… to a hand-carved eagle representing a nation.

What We Really Build

Yes, we build doors. Yes, we build gates. Yes, we build chandeliers engineered to last centuries.

But what we truly build is something rarer: We build masters. And we build pieces meant to outlive us.

Built to Last Forever. Not just in materials — but in knowledge, skill, and legacy.
