Designed from the Symbols of the 15th Century

The spade as we know it today originated in France around 1480 after many years of modification by various countries. The original suit symbols depicted on playing cards in Europe during the 1300s were Cups, Swords, Coins and Batons. As the popularity of cards grew, the game expanded from Italy into Belgium, France, and Spain, and then further into Switzerland and southwest Germany. Different countries began to modify the original suit symbols, even changing them completely into Hearts, Bells, Leaves and Acorns.

By the late 15th century, a man named Étienne Vignoles, a loyal secretary for a famous knight to King Charles the 7th, designed a set of new symbols - Cœurs, Carreaux, Trefles and Piques (the Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades of English decks). Piques, or spades, were modeled after the points of lances to symbolize the courage and strength of the Knights who served under the King.

Variations of the spade and lance design have been featured on many notable gates including the one at Petworth House in the parish of Petworth, West Sussex, England. Petworth House is a late 17th century country manor and is famous for its extensive art collection. The collection is home to many works by J.M.W. Turner, a beloved English Romanticist landscape artist.
