LORENZO GHIGLIERI'S STATUE OF LIBERTY BRONZE (Limited Edition)

It Was Made – Lost Wax Casting Process: Lost Wax Casting Process – Step-by-Step

Step Description
1. Clay Original Ghiglieri sculpts a highly detailed clay version of the piece.
2. Mold Making A flexible rubber mold is created around the clay sculpture.
3. Wax Casting The mold is filled with molten wax, cooled, and removed to form a hollow wax replica.
4. Wax Chasing Artisans refine the wax form, sharpening fine details to match Ghiglieri’s original design.
5. Ceramic Shell The wax model is dipped multiple times in ceramic slurry, forming a hardened shell.
6. Burnout The ceramic shell is kiln-fired, melting the wax out and leaving a hollow mold—hence "lost wax."
7. Bronze Pour Molten bronze (approx. 2,000°F) is poured into the empty ceramic mold.
8. Shell Removal After cooling, the ceramic shell is carefully broken away to reveal the raw bronze.
9. Metal Chasing Skilled artists retool details, enhance lines, and perfect textures by hand.
10. Patina Application Heat and chemicals are applied to develop rich bronze tones, including greens and golds.
11. Mounting The finished piece is mounted on a marble or bronze base, then signed and numbered.
