This Is A Prime Example Of How Scottsdale Art Factory Can Bring Together Historical Eras – Millions Of Years Apart – To Create A Unique 21st Century Heirloom.
Right Out Of A Page Of Old Western American History – We Bring The Famous Winchester Model 1873 .44 Rifle with its long history in the American Frontier and Old West. This is a lever-action rifle manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and was among the earliest of the repeating rifles. This particular gauge Winchester repeater was incredibly popular and is colloquially known as “The Gun that Won the West.”
The Natural Fern Fossil Sandstone Base – From Earth’s Late Triassic Period – used in this custom floor lamp originates from the area surrounding the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. The Chinle Formation found inside the park, where a majority of well-preserved fossils are found, includes megafossils of ferns and other flora from the Late Triassic Period, which is also sometimes known as the “Dawn of the Dinosaurs.” It is believed that the climate of this area during the Triassic Period was humid and tropical with a very large river system. They have found fossils of reptiles, fish, and vegetation throughout the Petrified Forest National Park. First discovered in the 1930s by a crew building a road through the Petrified Forest National Park, the fern fossils were found in mudstones near the center of the park. Ten well-characterized special fossils within the Chinle Formation of the park include the remains of ferns, approximately one-fifth of the plant megafossils.

Using a genuine antique fully working lever action Winchester 1873 rifle (The Gun That Won the West) – propped against a barren pine tree with a barrel lock – tells a story of the old West. Hand forged by our master blacksmiths from solid iron, the details of the tree have been meticulously crafted by our masters right down to the texture of the bark and pine cones. The authentic and genuine working 1873 Winchester rifle is joined to the tree trunk using a custom pin and antique brass or iron lock system. This allows the owner to keep the gun safe from small children, etc, but still be able to keep it at the ready in plain sight, just like the settlers did back in the Wild West frontier days.
Remove the lock and pull the iron “branch” pin to easily gain access to the rifle and your ready. The shade is hand crafted with genuine hand stretched and stitched rawhide, which has a translucent natural property to give the light a soft, pleasing glow. The tree has been finished with a unique patina process, where oxides are hand applied to the iron and then cured at over 1000 degrees to become a permanent part of the metal. This patina will never fade, chip or crack and actually beautifies with age. The wrought iron pine tree is permanently attached to the Triassic Period fern fossil sandstone base, creating a piece of freestanding American historical fine art.
