Mills Novelty Company - Company History

Mills antique slot machineThe Mills Novelty Company was founded in 1891 by Mortimer Mills in Chicago, Illinois. Mills was a leading U.S. manufacturer of coin operated vending machines such as jukeboxes and slot machines. They launched the first upright cabinet slot machine, the Mills Owl, in 1897. They exhibited their machines at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, where Ode D. Jennings (a future slot machine competitor) ran their penny arcade, The Spectatorium.

They invented the Mills Liberty Bell in 1907 in collaboration with slot machine inventor Charley Fey. By 1926 the company purchased the 375,000 square foot plant in northwest Chicago at 4100 Fullerton Avenue. Mills entered the jukebox industry in 1928 with models such as the Troubadour, Zephyr, and Do-Re-Me, and around 1935 they invented the model 47 cooler, a bottle vendor for Coca-Cola. In 1944 the company changed their name to Mills Industries, and in 1946 they established the Bell-O-Matic Corporation to distribute the Mills or Bells vending machines, including the slot machines.

In the early 1960s Mills Bell-O-Matic Corp. owned about 35% of the market shares on slot machine manufacturing. The company was sold by Tony Mills and ceased trading in the 1980s, however the Mills Novelty Company name is still in use today by the company that installs the Mills Violano Virtuoso - a self playing violin.
