Laocoön Group LGLG1505 – History and Artistic Legacy

The Laocoön Group is one of the most iconic masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture, believed to have been created between 42–20 BCE by the sculptors Hagesander, Athenodoros, and Polydorus of Rhodes. This powerful work portrays the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons entangled by sea serpents—an epic and tragic moment drawn from Virgil’s Aeneid. Discovered in 1505 in Rome, the sculpture was a revelation to the artists of the Renaissance and has remained a seminal influence on Western art. The original marble statue now resides in the Vatican Museums and is celebrated for its dynamic composition, intense emotion, and anatomical precision.

While many contemporary sculpto

rs have paid homage to classical themes, there is no record of internationally acclaimed master sculptor Lorenzo Ghiglieri (1931–2020) creating a version of the Laocoön Group. However, Treasure Investments Corporation (TIC), led by CEO Mark Russo Ghiglieri, has produced life-size bronze and pure silver castings of the Laocoön Group using molds sourced from the historic Chiurazzi Foundry—an institution known for its direct access to original Vatican sculptures.
