The buffalo is sacred to the Native Americans in the plains states. In the past, many Plains tribes would follow the buffalo herds, depending on them for food and shelter, and setting up camp as they moved. Once horses were introduced to the tribes, some adapted their hunting practices and began hunting buffalo from horseback with bows and arrows or lances. This door depicts one of the horseback hunts.
