History Of Chateau de Foix

Chateau de Foix was built as a 7th century fortification dating back to 987. in 1034 the Chateau became the capitol of County of Foix in France. The Chateau played a large role in Medieval military history as the county became a place of refuge for persecuted Cathars during the war. During the 15th century, the wars of Religion all Castles and other important structures were destroyed except for Chateau de Foix by orders of Richelieu. Today it stands as a large tourist attraction and has been named a historic monument since 1840.
